Terra Madre Day is an annual worldwide celebration and fundraising event for Slow Food, and it’s happening this Saturday November 19th in Vancouver. We were a part of last year’s gathering and have fond memories of the delicious food that was served as well as the cultural breadth of the evening; it’s an event any food lover would truly love.

The theme of this year’s event is “The Joy of Preserving”.
Food, Culture and Knowledge. We are looking at the big picture of preserving food: conserving the land it’s grown on, supporting the people who grow our food, and learning about different cultures and their traditional ways of preserving.
Slow Food is a celebration of local food with a vision of sustainable food production and consumption rooted in local economies and with respect for the environment, traditional knowledge, biological diversity and taste.
All proceeds from The Joy of Preserving will go toward our Terra Madre Fund, which sends local BC farmers to the international Terra Madre meeting. The meeting is like a United Nations of food where producers, chefs and academics get together to share ideas about food sustainability. Our farmers come back from Terra Madre inspired and committed to producing food that’s good for us and good for the planet.
Terra Madre kicks off at 6pm on Saturday with an exciting schedule filled with food producers, Vancouver chefs and restaurants, and food producers doing demos and serving good food. You won’t want to miss it. Tickets are by donation with a suggested price of $15.

Last night we celebrated our iPhone app launch with the Food Security Council and City of Vancouver at Creekside Community Center. It was a truly great event focused on the state of our local food community and the food system at large.

The event followed a day full of great feedback and support from our community of users and food lovers. It was really incredible, and on behalf of the entire team I want to thank everyone for their enthusiasm. I could go on and on but showing you is faster:

Next Wednesday June 29th is going to be a huge day for Foodtree and we’d love to see you there!
We’ve been working with the Vancouver Food Policy Council and the City of Vancouver to improve food security in this city, and to help connect Vancouver residents to the producers and processors of our local foods. Our collaboration culminates in an event at Creekside Community Centre on June 29th hosted by the Vancouver Food Policy Council which will feature the first public launch of our iPhone app that showcases fresh local food.
The Program includes:
- Introduction and discussion of the Vancouver Food Policy Council’s Food Secure Vancouver research study and report, “How Food Secure is Vancouver in a Changing World? 2010,” which establishes what food security is and how we can measure it. Discussion will be around how you or your organization can use and contribute to the report, and what comes next. The report can be downloaded for reading before the event at foodsecurevancouver.ca.
- Introduction to an exciting new mobile application being developed by Foodtree in partnership with the City of Vancouver, that highlights local food assets in Vancouver. [sneak peek]
- Introduction and first public consultation on the development of the Vancouver Food Strategy by City of Vancouver staff.
A dinner of local foods prepared by Vancouver chefs and caterers will accompany our discussion. A $5 cash donation at the door will help cover food expenses.

The Vancouver Farmers Market awesomeness continues this weekend with the opening of the Kitsilano Market on Sunday. There are fifty two vendors at this market for your food shopping pleasure, and four food trucks in case you need second breakfast or lunch.
The Kitsilano Market is located in the parking lot of the Kits Community Centre on 10th Avenue near Larch. It will be open 10am to 2pm every Sunday, starting this weekend until October 23rd.

This Saturday May 14th marks the beginning of the spring/summer Farmers Market season in Vancouver!
It’s opening day of the Trout Lake Market, and close to seventy vendors from farmers to food trucks will be there to provide fresh local food. Two items I’m hoping to find at the market this weekend are asparagus, and rhubarb – but I also love the food from the Roaming Dragon food truck.
The Market is located in the North parking lot of John Hendry Park at Trout Lake, between Templeton and Lakewood south of the 13th Avenue Alley.

It will be open from 9am to 2pm every Saturday from now until October 22nd.
